Pop-Culture Dates – Blue Towel Productions

So this is a post I’m pretty excited about, that I’ve been working on for a long time. I started working on over five years ago, as far as I can tell.

So the idea here, developed in the wake of similarly themed posts like my one about fictional characters with every set of possible initials and also my one about notable numbers, is to see if I could find a different fictional event that took place on each day of the year. So something that canonically occurs on January 1, another one for January 2, and so on. Unlike the other posts that I mentioned, which technically are not finished yet, I decided to wait to publish this one until I had completed the thing and found something for all 366 days of the year (leap year included).

And now I have! So here we go.

First, of course, some caveats and ground rules. Most obviously, my goal here is not to list every fictional event that I could find for a given date. There are are than a few dates that I do have more than one event listed (particularly my birthday), but the vast majority just have a singular entry. That doesn’t mean it was the only one I could find, just the one I liked the best. So if your favorite is missing, it’s possible that I don’t know about it, but it’s also possible that I just opted for something else. Still, I’d love to hear about them.

However I also tried to avoid overly-relying on the same franchise. I think there are 15 entries related to Quantum Leap for instance, which is a bit more than ideal, but there could have been loads more if I wasn’t concerned about being repetitive.

This is a big part of the reason why this took me so long to finish.

Also, I generally limited things to dates that were expressly communicated “in canon”–specified in the text, or on screen, or in dialogue or whatever. There are a handful, though, that come from other “authentic” sources like official websites or licensed calendars, or the like.

Finally a good chunk of the dates came because I ran into them organically, as I was reading the comic or watching the show or whatever. Some of them I even already knew (check out March 23, for example, or July 4th, or November 1st, for example). But many I found after extensive research online, using various fan wiki pages. I tried to double check everything I found in places like that, but if you spot any mistakes, again, be sure to let me know.

Finally finally, there are various Spoilers laced throughout this thing, so proceed at your own risk.

With all of that out of the way, let’s get to it!

January 1 – In The Hudsucker Proxy, this is the day that, just after midnight, Norville Barnes lands safely on the ground after his big fall.

January 2 – In 1940, Lennie Briscoe, the long-running detective on Law & Order, was born.

January 3 – The birthday of Todd Davis, aka Vision’s boss Mr. Hart, in WandaVision.

January 4 – In the comic book Batman: Year One, both Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon return to Gotham City on this day. Also, this is Humphrey Goodman’s birthday, in 1971, from Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise.

January 5 – Charlie and Raymond’s mother died on this day, from Rain Man

January 6 – The birthdate of Sherlock Holmes, in 1854.

January 7 – The birthdate of Ellen Ripley (of the Alien franchise) in 2092.

January 8 – The inception day of Roy Batty from Blade Runner.

January 9 – The initial court date in the movie Kramer vs. Kramer

January 10 – According to the Super DC 1976 Calendar, this was the birthday of Snapper Carr.

January 11 – According to the novel The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh, Volume Two, the Botany Bay was launched from Earth on this day in 1996.

January 12 – The HAL 9000 computer became operational at HAL Laboratories in Urbana, Illinois (according to 2001: A Space Odyssey)

January 13 – In the year 3019 of the Third Age, various events pertaining to the Fellowship of the Ring (from The Lord of the Rings) take place–they are attacked by wolves, they arrive at the West Gate of Moria, and Gollum begins to follow traces of the Ring-bearer.

January 14 – On this date in 1972, according to Planet of the Apes, the spacecraft Liberty 1 lifted off from Cape Kennedy with astronauts Dodge, Landon, Stewart, and Taylor on board. The ship disappears, apparently, in a Hasslein Curve. This date in 1966 is also the point of divergence for the alternate timeline seen in the series For all Mankind.

January 15 – In The Lord of the Rings, the Fellowship parts after Gandalf falls into Khazad-dûm while fighting a Balrog.

January 16 – The birthday of Lena Thorul, Lex Luthor’s sister, according to Action Comics #297 from 1963. (This contradicts the date in the Super DC 1976 Calendar, which said her birthday was December 16th.)

January 17 – Sonya Winter’s ad at the start of The Assassination Bureau was published on this day.

January 18 – The birthday of Seymour Roger Griffiths, who became Lieutenant Green, in Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons.

January 19 – The space station Babylon 4 disappears shortly after becoming operational in 2254, in the TV series Babylon 5.

January 20 – The day Helen Kimble was murdered in The Fugitive (1993).

January 21 – The date in 2992 of a Daily Planet issue (Interlac edition) which featured an article by Megan O’Ryan (the Xanthu bureau chief) which reported that a Rebirth summit found that the United Planets’ tech-economy problems, and not the Khunds, caused the ’89 collapse. All of this is seen in an issue of Legion of Super-Heroes, 4th edition.

January 22 – The date in 2155 that “Terra Prime”–the last episode of Star Trek Enterprise that was actually set in the 22nd Century–was set.

January 23 – The day in Kramer vs. Kramer that custody of Billy Kramer was scheduled to shift between his father to his mother.

January 24 – In The Office, this is Andy Bernard’s birthday in 1973.

January 25 – The start of the Babylon 5 episode “The Geometry of Shadows”, from the second season of the show, takes place on this day in 2259. Amongst other events, Lord Refa talks to Londo Mollari about the fact that the emperor’s health is failing and that their world may soon experience a power vacuum.

January 26 – In 1953, the Nite Owl killings are reported in the LA Times, in the movie LA Confidential.

January 27 – The day in 1982 that Sam Beckett leaps into talk-show host Roberto Guiterraz in the Quantum Leap episode Roberto!

January 28 – The Samaritan debuts to the general public, having saved the space shuttle Challenger from exploding, in the first issue of the comic series Astro City.

January 29 – In The Truman Show, the reality show of the same name debuts.

January 30 – The birthday, in 1960, of Lily Evans, who eventually became Lily Potter, in the Harry Potter universe.

January 31 – The date where the tides make it ideal for a boat to reach Australia, according to Ameer in the first episode of Stateless.

February 1 – The day in 1985 that Sam Beckett leaps into Dylan Powell, a TV news reporter, in the Quantum Leap episode “Temptation Eyes“.

February 2 – Groundhog Day! And thus the day that is repeated for Phil Connors uncountable times in the movie Groundhog Day.

February 3 – This is the day (in 1862) that was on the gravestone for Arch Stanton in the movie The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

February 4 – An article in the Daily Bugle published on this date in 1984 reports about the missing super-heroes (they were off fighting in the pages of Secret Wars), according to Amazing Spider-Man #252.

February 5 -In the graphic novel The Golden Age, by James Robinson and Paul Smith, this is the day in 1948 that Tex Thompson (in reality, the Ultra-Humanite) announces the government’s plan to turn former superhero sidekick Daniel Dunbar into the greatest hero the world has known.

February 6 – In real life, this was the day in 1952 that it was discovered that King George VI had died in his sleep, and his daughter Elizabeth became queen of the United Kingdom. As such, it was a major event in an early episode of the series The Crown called “Hyde Park Corner.”

February 7 – In the Community episode “Basic Email Security”, this is the day in 2013 that Chang emails Jeff that Britta was “1” and Annie was “2”.

February 8 – In 2972, Assets Magazine publishes an article about the rise of financier R.J. Brande (according to Legion of Super-Heroes, 4th Edition #8)

February 9 – The day that the second episode of Calls starts on, as Rose and Mark have their first phone call.

February 10 – In 2009, this is the date of the third video diary seen in Jurassic World: Dominion, where Charlotte is seen with baby Maisie. It’s also Adam’s birthday in 2010 in The Adam Project.

February 11 – Joel asks for Clem to be erased from his mind on this day in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

February 12 – In 2015, this is the day that Skylar’s mother dies in a car accident, from the 7th episode of Calls.

February 13 – In 2154, on this date, the NX-01 prepares to enter the Xindi vortex to prevent the deployment of the Xindi weapon, in the series Star Trek Enterprise.

February 14 – Algernon and Cecily are engaged this day, according to Cecily’s diary in The Importance of Being Earnest.

February 15 – The climax of Young Justice Season 3, featuring Brion killing Baron Bedlam.

February 16 – Marius and Cosette get married in 1833, in Les Miserables.

February 17 – Otto’s day of death in 2022, in the film A Man Called Otto.

February 18 – According to the Super DC 1976 Calendar, this is the birthday of Eobard Thawn, aka the Reverse Flash.

February 19 – In The Dry, this is the day Karen writes the word “Grant” on the back of a library receipt.

February 20 – Dave Lister joined the Red Dwarf mining ship in 2181, according to Red Dwarf.

February 21 – Tony and Doug’s arrival date in 1861 in The Time Tunnel episode “The Death Trap,” where they have to stop an early assassination attempt on Abraham Lincoln.

February 22 – In the movie Hot Fuzz, this is the birthday of the guy that an annoyed Nicholas Angel confronts in a pub. When he asks him which year, the guy replies, “Every year.”

February 23 – Edith Keeler meets with FDR in 1936, causing changes in history, in the Star Trek episode, “City on the Edge of Forever”.

February 24 – The murder of Laura Palmer in 1989, in Twin Peaks.

February 25 – Jebediah Springfield founds Springfield in 1796, in The Simpsons.

February 26 – In Daredevil Born Again‘s first season, this is the day that the last day of Hector Ayala’s trial takes place.

February 27 – The Silver Agent declared “Guilty” in a headline in 1973, in an issue of Astro City.

February 28 – The birthday of John Conner in the Terminator series.

February 29 – The fictionalized birthday of Clark Kent, aka Superman, something that was first introduced in the 60s, and more or less canonized in comics in the 1980’s.

March 1 – The date of Ellie’s death in the flashback sequences of the movie The Dry.

March 2 – In 1961, earth has its first encounter with aliens according to Men in Black.

March 3 – The day of a message from Natasha to Loss in Aelita, in 1922.

March 4 – In the “Golden Ticket” episode of the Office, this is the day that Michael Scott came up with the Golden Ticket idea that blew up in Dunder-Mifflin’s face.

March 5 – The day of death for Ellie Oswald, the mother of Clara Oswald, on Doctor Who.

March 6 – According to the Super DC 1976 Calendar, this was the birthday of Aqualad.

March 7 – The first X-Files case takes place on this day in the series The X-Files.

March 8 – The birthday, in 1783, of Jacob Marley, from A Christmas Carol.

March 9 – Marc Spector’s birthday in 1987, according to the streaming show Moon-Knight.

March 10 – At the beginning of the movie Lost Horizon, this is the day that Robert Conway and others evacuate from the city of Baskul, China.

March 11 – Bruce Wayne re-evaulates his mission in Batman Year One, becoming inspired when a bat flies through his window. Also, in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, this is the day the earth is destroyed in 2012. And in the novel Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, plowing began on this day in a previous year.

March 12 – The death of Bunny occurred on this day at the end of the first season of Only Murders in the Building. A diary entry in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari reveals that this is the day that a somnambulist who became known as Cesare was admitted to the asylum.

March 13 – According to the cartoon Happy Birthday Donald this was Donald Duck’s original birthday. It has since been changed.

March 14 – The day in 2018 where Wade Wilson is meeting with Happy Hogan at the start of Deadpool & Wolverine.

March 15 – In The Office, this is Michael Scott’s Birthday (the same as Eva Longoria).

March 16 – The Newsroom, season 2 episode 5, which features fighting breaking out in Syria, takes place on this day.

March 17 – In The Fugitive (1993), US Marshall Sam Gerrard spots Dr Richard Kimble in a hospital & chases him into the streets of Chicago. Kimble loses him by joining the St Patrick’s Day Parade.

March 18 – Leeloo lands in Korben Dallas’ taxi in The Fifth Element.

March 19 – The day in 1966 that Sam leaps mentally disabled dock worker Jimmy Lamotta (for the second time) in the Quantum Leap episode “Deliver Us From Evil”.

March 20 – The death of Catherine, giving birth to Cathy, in 1784, in the novel Withering Heights. Sixteen years later, on the same day, young Cathy meets Heathcliff.

March 21 – The birthday, in 1940, of Walter Kovacs, who will become known as Rorschach, from the graphic novel Watchmen.

March 22 – Jim Kirk (of Star Trek) is born in Riverside, Iowa, on this day in 2233.

March 23 – The day of the disastrous film preview in Singin’ in the Rain.  That night, Don Lockwood, Kathy Selden and Cosmo Brown pondered the future of their career in the movies.

March 24 – The day The Breakfast Club takes place, in 1984.

March 25 – Pam Beesley’s birthday, in 1979, in The Office.

March 26 – Artemis learns of Conner Kent’s death in season 4, episode 5 Young Justice (“Tale of Two Sisters”).

March 27 – The day that Taylor makes his last report before putting himself in hibernation in the original Planet of the Apes movie.

March 28 – The date (in an unspecified year of the 1700s) of Robert Walton’s second letter to his sister in the framing sequences of the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley.

April 2 – During the Justice League’s trial on Rimbor, news of the Reach’s activity on earth is revealed, displeasing Mongul, who is in attendance. All this according to a season 2 episode of Young Justice, “War.”

April 3 – The date in 1862 when Garcia Flynn travels to save the life of Jesse James in the 12th episode of the first season of Timeless.

April 4 – The date at the beginning of George Orwell’s book, 1984, apparently.

April 5 – First contact day in the Star Trek universe, where humans meet Vulcans for the first time, 2063.

April 6 – The date in 1961 that Atomicus is created in Astro City. Also the day that the one-take movie 1917 takes place.

April 7 – In 1970, the day that Sam Beckett leaps into a member of his brother’s platoon, in “The Leap Home part 2–Vietnam“.

April 17 – The return day for Apollo 13, as depicted in the movie Apollo 13.

May 9 – This is the day that is repeating in Boss Level. It’s also the date that gives the name to the Five / Nine hack in Mr. Robot, being the birthday of Edward Alderson.

May 10 – Finals day, in the movie Real Genius. Also River Cartwright’s birthday from Slow Horses.

May 11 – The day that Caroline Hamilton, the villain of the Wonder Woman episode “Knockout”, resigned from the San Francisco police department. Also the birthdate of Niko’s daughter in Another Life, and Prim’s birthday in The Hunger Games.

May 12 – In 1976, this is the date that Deborah Ann Kaye was admitted to St. Catherine Labouré Hospital in The Verdict.

May 13 – The puzzle boxes are delivered at the start of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

May 14 – The last question is asked of the Multivac in the short story The Last Question by Isaac Asimov.

May 15 – Beth Chapel was born on May 15th, 2004, in Omaha General Hospital to Bridget and James Chapel. She will become Dr. Mid-Nite in Stargirl. Also, according to his dossier in the opening credits of the first Mission: Impossible movie, this is the birthdate of Ethan Hunt, in 1961.

May 16 – The verdict of James Steel’s trial for perverting the course of justice in the episode “Skeletons”, in Law & Order UK, was delivered this day.

May 17 – This is the predicted day of the death of the father in The World Will Tremble.

May 18 – Elena Gavrik’s birthday, in 1955, according to medical records seen in episode 5 of Series 10 of Spooks.

May 19 – Batman tells a bunch of rich and corrupt city leaders where it’s at in Batman: Year One (“Ladies. Gentlemen. You have eaten well.”)

May 20 – In 2336, this is Kathryn Janeway’s birthday.  She will become the starship captain who starred in Star Trek Voyager.

May 21 – The date in 1927 where the team travelled to rescue Charles Lindbergh in episode 14 of season 1 of Timeless.

May 22 – Apparently, the birthday of Ash Ketchum, from Pokemon.

May 23 – Tom meets Autumn in 500 Days of Summer. It’s also the possible date that things take place in the movie Run Lola Run.

May 24 – The date that Belinda Chandra left earth on in 2025 in the Doctor Who episode The Robot Revolution, and thus the date the TARDIS was being repelled from throughout that season.

May 25 – Abraham Simpson was born in 1907, in The Simpsons.

May 26 – Gru steals the moon (but misses the recital) in Despicable Me.

May 27 – Barty Crouch Senior is killed by his son Barty Crouch Junior in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

May 28 – The rape in the main case of Broadchurch season 3 takes place.

May 29 – Tony Stark’s birthday, in 1970, in the Marvel Cinematic universe, making him less than two weeks older than me, although slightly more accomplished.

May 30 – John Locke birthday, from Lost, in 1956. Apparently, it’s also astronaut Dave Bowman’s birthday from 2001: A Space Odyssey, according to the creators background production notes.

May 31 – Amongst many other events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the preponderance of evidence suggests that this is the day that Thor was stripped of much of his power and banished to Midgard (earth) by Odin, in either 2010 or 2011, depending on interpretation.

June 1 – The aliens arrive in Johannesburg, in 1982, in District 9.

June 2 – The day in 1866 that Theodore Maxtible and the Daleks took the Doctor and Jamie back to in the Doctor Who serial “The Evil of the Daleks.”

June 3 – The first day of Summer Vacation, it seems, based on the opening credits of Phineas and Ferb.

June 4 – Churchill’s “We shall fight on the beaches” speech, as seen in Darkest Hour. Also, the earth finally succumbs to centuries of abuse and is destroyed in 2994 (Legion of Super-Heroes, 4th edition, #38).

June 5 – Ferris Buehller’s Day Off!

June 6 – The birthday of Joseph Reagan, the deceased brother of the main family in Blue Bloods. Also the day that the barricades fell in Les Misérables, in 1832, and thus the day that Enjorlas is killed.

June 7 – June 7, 1996 – the dates of the Confidential Funding Report for Project Khan in Star Trek Picard, season 2. In 1919, in Three Ages, this is the date that the investigation took place into the bigamist and forger named after Wallace Beery, according to a police report. In A Silent Voice, June 7 is Nishimaya’s birthday. Batman is nearly taken down by the police on this day in Batman: Year One. June 7th is also the date at the start of Five Days to Midnight–and thus the birthday of the main character’s daughter. In the Doctor Who story Mawdryn Undead, this is the day Tegan met the Brigadier in 1977. The birthday of Eleven from Stranger Things, apparently. And the day that Inspector Javert from Les Miserables commits suicide.

June 8 – June 8, 1925 was the date of the contract between Lina Lamont with Monumental Studios in the movie Singin’ in the Rain.

June 9 – Donald Duck’s birthday, usually.

June 10 – The date that Spinner’s Rock was claimed by the British according to an episode of Death in Paradise, called “One for the Road”. MJ’s birthday as revealed in her passport in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

June 11 – The predicted death day for Professor J.T. Neumayer on the science fiction miniseries, Five Days to Midnight.

June 12 – On June 12, 2179, Carter Burke sent a directive to the inhabitants of Hadley’s Hope to investigate the location that he knew contained a dangerous Xenomorph, in Aliens.

June 13 – In season 2 of Young Justice, in an episode called “Intervention,” Blue Beetle is abducted by the Team on this day.

June 14 – According to Dr. Renault’s journal, this was the day that he captured the ape that he would one day transform into the human-like Noel, in the movie Dr. Renault’s Secret. Also, this was the date of Dwight and Angela’s wedding in the finale of The Office.

June 15 – In 1945, Sam and Al are both Tom Jarrett in “The Leap Back” episode of Quantum Leap.

June 16 – The day that Jesse and Celine meet each other and spend together in Before Sunrise. Apparently, it’s also the day that the entirety of the novel Ulysses by James Joyce takes place.

June 17 – In 1897, in Dracula, the novel, Jonathan Harker sees people unloading big wooden boxes while he is a prisoner. He attempts to flag them down for help, but they leave.

June 18 – In the first episode of Gravity Falls, this is the date of the first journal entry. In an old Robert Kanigher Wonder Woman story, this is one day a year that the hero loses her powers!

June 19 – According to the Super DC 1976 Calendar, this was the birthday of Shayera, aka Hawkgirl.

June 20 – Wally West’s death at the end of Season two of Young Justice.

June 21 – Birth of “Baby” Diego, the last youngest person on Earth, in the movie Children of Men.

June 22 – “Summerween” in Season 1 of Gravity Falls. Also Charlie Francis’ birthday, in 1976, from Fringe.

June 23 – The date of the emergency call in the first episode of Criminal Record.

June 24 – On the home video seen in The Mitchells vs. the Machines, June 24, 2009 was the date Katie struggled to go to camp, and was given her moose.

June 25 – The date of the auction for the house that Andy and Becky ultimately buy in season 3 of Detectorists.

June 26 – Amy and Rory’s wedding day in 2010, on Doctor Who in the episode “The Big Bang”. It’s also the day of the moon landing in For all Mankind in 1969.

June 27 – The day of the gruesome annual event described in The Lottery, a short story by Shirley Jackson

December 1 – Rosa Parks’ stand-off on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. The Thirteenth Doctor and her companions are present for this event in the Doctor Who episode “Rosa.”

December 2 – In Casablanca, it was on this day that Ilsa walks into Rick’s bar.

December 3 – Jack Shephard’s birthday, in 1969, from Lost.

December 4 – Troy Barnes’ birthday, in 1989, from Community. Also the day when a mysterious radio signal is received in 1921 in Aelita.

December 5 – The date from the Doctor Who Flux episode, “Survivors of the Flux,” that Yaz and the others are chasing down.

December 6 – The events of the third season Lost episode “Tricia Tanaka is Dead” take place, during whicht Hurley and other crash survivors discover as an overturned van. Hurley is eventually able to get this working, allowing him to believe he has broken his prolonged streak of bad luck.

December 7 – The bombing of Pearl Harbor, and thus a day that features in many stories, including the film Pearl Harbor. In one episode of The Bionic Woman, it’s also the day that Oscar Goldman’s brother was supposed to deliver money to an American intelligence agent, just prior to the bombing.
